SisterHoodies is an organization my sister Diana and I, Ariana Martell, began in November of 2011 to help those in need in our city. It began when we met a homeless man by the name of Stephen at an intersection near our home. My sister Diana has always been very compassionate towards dogs, and after noticing that Stephen had a dog, we befriended him. We often took Stephen and his dog Hero food and clothes, but only a few months after we met Stephen, he passed away from hypothermia behind a bowling alley near where we live. We were deeply affected by his death, and in honor of Stephen, we began SisterHoodies, to prevent others like Stephen from suffering the way he did. The first year we passed around fliers to the neighbors in our vicinity, at my father's office, and asked everyone we could think of to help. In total we collected, washed, and sorted 115 coats and jackets. It was the beginning of an encouraging journey that motivated us to continue for the following years as well as expand. We donated the coats to a homeless women and children's shelter, The Reynolds Home, as well as a Rescue Mission. I had never witnessed so much joy from anyone in my entire life. It was comforting to see the smiling faces and the happy tears of those who needed the jackets.
Since the winter of 2011, SisterHoodies has donated over 1,500 warm weather items to the Reynolds Home and the Rescue Mission of El Paso. We not only collect jackets, coats, and warm weather attire, we also collect toiletries, cleaning supplies, and diapers. For more information, click here. We have expanded from the Eastside to all over the city. Being able to give back to the community we have grown up in has made the experience much more meaningful.
There is no gift like the gift of time, and we learned that through the Magic of Volunteering. Any amount of time donated is a minute that makes a difference not only in our own lives, but also in someone else's life. That minute can change a person's point of view and impact their life in the way that they know they have made a difference. We at SisterHoodies love to serve our city in any way possible and as a result, we have chosen a life of service. Seeing the joy that donating time brings to the people you serve makes volunteering worth the time and effort. When people ask us why we volunteer, we tell them it is because you either have too much time or not enough, and using your time to serve others is not being wasteful nor conservative, it is being generous.
We would like to say a special thanks to everyone who has helped us in our efforts over the years.
